Data Storytelling and Visualisation
Charts · Dashboards · Narrative · Donor Reports · Presentations
Most organisations have staff who can collect and analyse data but cannot communicate what it means. Numbers in a table tell nothing. A well-designed chart and a clear narrative tell everything. This training closes the gap between analysis and communication.
We teach participants how to choose the right chart, design it clearly, and build a narrative around it that decision-makers and donors can act on. No coding required — this training uses tools your team already has.
What Participants Learn
- Choosing the right chart type for the right question — bar, line, scatter, pie, and when each applies
- Design principles for data: contrast, hierarchy, colour, labels, and removing clutter
- Building clear charts in Excel, Power BI, and Google Sheets
- Structuring a data narrative — what happened, why it matters, what should be done
- Designing slides and report pages that present data to non-technical audiences
- Translating technical findings into plain language for donors, government, and community
- Creating infographics for programme communication and social media
Who This Is For
- Programme officers and M and E staff who write donor reports
- Communications and advocacy staff producing public-facing materials
- Managers who present findings to boards and leadership teams
- Researchers who need to communicate findings beyond academic audiences
- Any team that produces reports but receives feedback that they are hard to read
Available as: 1-day awareness, 3-day applied workshop, or a 5-day bootcamp. Can be integrated into MEL or communications team training. Available in English and Kiswahili.
Excel & Advanced Excel for Data Analysis
Formulas · Pivot Tables · Data Cleaning · Charts · Dashboards · Basic to Advanced
Excel is the most widely used data tool in East Africa — in government, NGOs, health facilities, banks, and private sector. Almost everyone has it. Very few use it well. Most organisations are managing data in Excel in ways that take three times longer than necessary, produce errors, and break when files get large.
This is not an Excel orientation. This is Excel specifically for data work — cleaning messy data, summarising large datasets, building charts that communicate clearly, and creating simple dashboards your team can update themselves.
What Participants Learn
- Data entry best practices — structuring data so Excel can work with it
- Essential formulas — IF, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, COUNTIF, SUMIF, AVERAGEIF, TEXT, DATE
- Data cleaning — removing duplicates, fixing formatting, splitting columns, handling blanks
- Sorting, filtering, and working with large datasets efficiently
- Pivot Tables — summarising thousands of rows in seconds
- Charts — choosing the right chart, formatting for clarity, avoiding common mistakes
- Simple dashboards — combining charts and summaries for reporting
- Data validation — preventing wrong data entry at the source
- Introduction to Power Query for data transformation
Programme Levels
- Foundation (1 day) — for staff who use Excel only for basic data entry. Covers formulas, sorting, filtering, and basic charts.
- Intermediate (3 days) — for staff who use Excel regularly. Adds VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, data cleaning, and charts.
- Applied Analysis (5 days) — for staff responsible for data reporting. Full data analysis workflow from raw data to a finished report.
- Custom — we assess your team first and design a programme targeting the specific gaps in your actual workflow.
Available for: Government agencies, NGOs, health programmes, banks, schools, and individual professionals building their data skills. This is the most accessible entry point into data skills training — no prior technical background required. Delivered in English or Kiswahili.
Research Methods for Practitioners
Study Design · Research Questions · Sampling · Data Collection · Analysis · Write-Up
This is not academic research training. This is applied research for programme staff, managers, and professionals who need to design studies, collect evidence, and write up findings — without a full academic research background.
Many development organisations are expected to generate evidence and produce research reports but their staff have never been trained in how to do this systematically. This training fills that gap practically and directly.
What Participants Learn
- Defining a research question — what makes a question answerable and useful
- Choosing a research design — descriptive, comparative, experimental, case study
- Sampling — probability and non-probability methods, sample size decisions, avoiding bias
- Data collection methods — surveys, interviews, focus groups, observation, document review
- Designing and piloting a questionnaire or interview guide
- Ethical considerations in research — consent, confidentiality, harm prevention
- Basic data analysis — what to do with the data once collected
- Writing a research report — structure, language, presenting findings for different audiences
- Presenting findings to decision-makers and donors
Who This Is For
- Programme staff expected to conduct assessments, surveys, or evaluations
- NGO and government staff writing reports based on field evidence
- Health workers conducting community needs assessments
- Managers commissioning research and needing to evaluate its quality
- Students and early-career researchers building foundational skills
- Any professional who has been asked to "do a study" without knowing how
Available as: 3-day intensive or 5-day applied workshop including field practice. Also available as a standalone module within broader MEL or M and E training programmes. Delivered in English or Kiswahili.
Artificial Intelligence for Professionals
AI Literacy · ChatGPT · Copilot · Gemini · Responsible Use · No Coding Required
AI tools are already changing how professionals work across every sector. Staff who know how to use them well save hours every week. Staff who do not are falling behind. This training is not about building AI — it is about using it effectively, critically, and responsibly in your daily work.
No coding. No technical background required. This is for everyone.
What Participants Learn
- What AI is and what it is not — cutting through the hype with accurate understanding
- How large language models work in plain language — what they can and cannot do
- Using ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini for real work tasks
- Prompt engineering — how to write instructions that produce useful outputs
- Using AI for report drafting, summarising documents, generating ideas, and editing writing
- Using AI for data work — generating formulas, writing SQL queries, explaining statistical output
- Critical evaluation of AI output — when to trust it and when to verify
- Responsible use — data privacy, hallucinations, bias, confidentiality risks
- AI tools relevant to your specific sector and role
Who This Is For
- Any professional wanting to work more efficiently using AI tools
- NGO and government staff writing reports, proposals, and communications
- Managers who want to understand what AI can realistically do for their organisation
- Programme staff using data and wanting AI to assist with analysis tasks
- Leadership teams making decisions about AI adoption in their organisation
Available as: Half-day awareness session for leadership, 1-day applied workshop for all staff, or 3-day deep dive including hands-on practice with AI tools on real work tasks. Available in English and Kiswahili. One of our most requested training programmes right now.
Power BI for Managers and Decision-Makers
Reading Dashboards · Asking the Right Questions · Data-Informed Decisions · Half-Day or 1 Day
Every organisation that invests in Power BI dashboards faces the same problem: the technical team builds excellent dashboards that leadership does not know how to use. This training is not about building dashboards — it is about using them to make better decisions.
A manager who can read a dashboard, ask the right follow-up questions, and identify when the data is incomplete or misleading is far more valuable to an organisation than one who simply receives reports and accepts them.
What Managers Learn
- How to navigate a Power BI dashboard — filters, slicers, drill-through, and cross-filtering
- How to read charts correctly — what different chart types show and what they hide
- How to spot misleading visualisations — truncated axes, cherry-picked date ranges, missing denominators
- What questions to ask your data team when a dashboard raises concerns
- How to request the right view of data for the decision you need to make
- Basic export — how to pull data and charts from Power BI for presentations and reports
- Understanding data freshness — when was this data last updated and does it matter
Who This Is For
- Directors, managers, and team leaders who receive dashboard reports
- Board members and governance bodies reviewing organisational performance data
- Programme leads responsible for monitoring but not for building systems
- Government officials using ministry reporting dashboards
- Donor representatives reviewing grantee performance dashboards
Available as: Half-day session (awareness and navigation only) or 1-day session (includes hands-on dashboard exercises). Designed specifically for non-technical audiences. Can be combined with the technical Power BI training to give an organisation both builders and effective users. Delivered in English or Kiswahili.
Training of Trainers
ToT Design · Internal Trainer Development · Cascade Training · Facilitation Skills
Training every staff member directly is expensive, slow, and unsustainable. A Training of Trainers programme builds internal capacity inside your organisation — we train your best people to train the rest, and we give them everything they need to do it well.
The result is an organisation that no longer depends on external trainers for every need. Your internal trainers carry the knowledge, the materials, and the confidence to cascade skills across teams, regions, and departments independently.
What a ToT Engagement Includes
- Selection criteria — helping you identify the right people to become internal trainers
- Subject matter training — your internal trainers master the content first, at a deeper level than participants will need
- Adult learning principles — how adults learn, what blocks learning, how to respond when participants struggle
- Facilitation skills — managing a room, handling questions, reading the group, pacing sessions
- Training design — how to adapt content to different audiences and contexts
- Assessment and feedback — how to measure whether learning happened
- Co-facilitation — internal trainers deliver the first sessions alongside UWEZO AFRIKA, before going independent
- Trainer toolkit — all materials, session guides, slides, and exercises handed over and editable
What You Get at the End
- A team of certified internal trainers who can deliver the programme independently
- A complete, editable training toolkit — yours to use and adapt
- A quality assurance checklist so training stays consistent across facilitators
- A post-ToT support period — UWEZO AFRIKA available for questions as your trainers deliver their first independent sessions
- Reduced long-term training costs — your internal capacity replaces repeat external engagement
Best suited for: Government agencies cascading skills across departments or regions, NGOs with field offices in multiple locations, health programmes training community health workers, corporations building internal learning and development capacity, and donor-funded projects that require sustainable skills transfer beyond the project period.
Remote and Online Training Delivery
Online · Blended · Live Virtual Sessions · Self-Paced Modules · Tanzania and Beyond
Distance is not a barrier. Whether your team is in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mwanza, Mbeya, or across the region, we deliver the same quality of training without requiring everyone to travel to one location.
We offer fully online, fully in-person, and blended delivery. The right format depends on your team size, location spread, internet reliability, and the nature of the skills being built. We design around your reality, not an ideal situation.
Delivery Formats
- Live virtual sessions — trainer-led sessions via Zoom or Google Meet. Interactive, with screen sharing, live exercises, and Q and A throughout.
- Blended learning — online modules for theory and concepts, in-person or virtual sessions for practice and feedback
- Self-paced online modules — recorded content participants complete at their own schedule. Includes exercises, quizzes, and assignments submitted for review.
- Hybrid cohorts — some participants in person, others joining remotely in the same session
- WhatsApp-supported learning — structured learning delivered through WhatsApp groups for teams with limited internet. Includes reading materials, exercises, voice notes, and scheduled live check-ins.
How We Ensure Quality Online
- Sessions are kept short — maximum 3 hours with breaks. Online attention has shorter limits than in-person.
- Exercises every 20 to 30 minutes — participants practise, not just watch
- Recordings provided for review and catch-up
- Dedicated support channel — participants can ask questions between sessions
- Pre-session technical checks — we confirm every participant can connect and access tools before training begins
- Low-bandwidth alternatives prepared for participants with poor connectivity
Available across: Tanzania (all regions), Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and other East and Southern African countries. Training can be delivered in English or Kiswahili. Contact us to discuss your team location and connectivity situation before we design the programme.
Mentorship and Individual Support
